a covenant of wings
it’s not my soul i want to show you
though blue is never hard to find
not my heart that opens
petal by petal
nor an hourglass ticking beads
of broken glass and burnished
mirror
i lay on the ground and stare at sky
to see the everything of nothingness
but there is no cloud
to hang my string from
and i find
i don’t want to be tethered
i embrace eternity’s grace
even as it leaves me
barren
open
whole
i’ve moved past something
without even knowing i was turning
and if i lay here long enough
the sun will bleach my bones
i find this comforting
the dance that began in my feet
has found the window of my eyes
i let the music fly
sigh dry
cry high
this
is what i want you to hear
this is the year
i learned to sing

Oh this is beautiful…I especially love

There is a graceful interior movement in the poem that mirrors what happens to a woman’s psyche. All our souls are vulnerable and sometimes it’s large assaults or a lifetime of small ones that cause us to re-set our sights – change our minds – move in a different direction. Well captured here!

This poem is full of music and words you sing are perfect. Loved this: “but there is no cloud
to hang my string from
and i find
i don’t want to be tethered”

Learning to sing the silence, as the bleached bones sing. These are timeless stories you tell.

This poems says so much..may we all sing our songs untethered.
July 30th, 2013 at 8:51 pm
it was “moving past something without even knowing i was turning” – that was the point where i moved past just being in the mood and beauty of your words, as amazing and wonderful as that was/always is, and took them for me – where it became really personal and mine, mine, mine. you do that better than anyone i know – sneak up on me and silently grab me.

Jeez Kelly, you blow me away. How to you come up with such deep, rich, moving and mind blowing pieces. You’re amazingly talented and I know I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again . . . I love my visits here.

“i’ve moved past something
without even knowing i was turning”
I find a kind of comfort in that line. This is really well thought and composed.

This poem stands out, like a classic, because of its essence and beauty. I feel you truly opened your heart with this one and you really do sing your song. I hear it.

my writing style is so heavy and thick with viscous meaning and yours is so light and subtle and beautiful that it always comes as a welcome relief and real pleasure to read and enjoy the watercolours of your mind: thank you
i lay on the ground and stare at sky
to see the everything of nothingness
takes me away and into your vision.

I loved the ending. The year you learned to sing. It could easily be the year you felt free or your learnt to fly. Beautiful poem. Many thanks.
Greetings from London.

“this is the year
i learned to sing”
If we all learned to sing, perhaps there’d be harmony. Nice job.
