core
in a world filled with too many choices
how do we ever decide?
and why is the apple always drawn
to the battle of good versus evil?
adam and eve, snow white and
the wicked, hello my little pretty
and one bad can ruin the barrel,
crab and golden, eye and pie
caramel candy truths and
half-baked sugar coating
delicious, filled with life and seed
s(k)in and marrow
i wonder, tiny orb, as you hang
from your dreary tree of ornament,
why i was drawn to you and not
all the others, those brothers
of fall and folly and, of course,
you do not answer, being all ripe
and ready for the picking
you hold no wisdom beneath
the blush of skin, just beautysinbeauty
and the flavor of earth
in your heart.

just beautysinbeauty . . . yes. yes. it is always mixed together.

Love the play on the all pervasive apple…the good, the evil, and ultimately the bottom line of when one’s ripe for pickin’ 🙂

I adore this, the photo, the wordplay, and especially the question. It is easier to live without the questions or to pretend that the consequences to the answers could be fairy-taled away. I am greatly relieved the storm has left you safe.

nice…the flavor of earth in your heart…i like a good apple…and sadly it is the seed of temptation but then again, the caramel apple should probably fill that role…smiles…
filled with life and seed
s(k)in and marrow
that bit of verse is delicious…

caramel candy truths and
half-baked sugar coating…I love this gem!
The poor apple-sometimes it’s enough to serve an obvious purpose, especially that of tasting great. No editorial comment necessary. Nice job!

This started off strong and quickly became excellent. Great build to the end:
“you hold no wisdom beneath
the blush of skin, just beautysinbeauty
and the flavor of earth
in your heart.”
**** (that’s four stars to you!)

OK ms. average Jo. How do you do it? Every post gets better and better. You knocked the ball out of the park with this one. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!

Ahhh… the original…When I wrote about this a couple of months ago, someone said ‘Eve has always taken the blame for it all as the temptress and women have been placed second place ever since and yet, all Adam had to do was say ‘No’…lol
Loved this!

I think about that stuff every time I eat an apple and wind up having another argument with those imaginary religion agents who still reside there. An apple a day cliche wasn’t coined without reason. Cancer fighter, teeth cleaner and whitener, great for digestion and source of fiber, natural curative. God would never have forbidden it – or sex either I’m thinkin’ as we were put here to procreate as is all life! Fab poem, deep and light all at once…like Mom’s apple pie!

and the flavor of earth/ in your heart… you ending is supple. the entire poem reads with delicious flavor and honest skin. lovely.

Love this, start to finish, but especially this bit:
caramel candy truths and
half-baked sugar coating
Beautiful writing. Makes me want to eat an apple. And it is, I suppose, their time.

This is a beautiful poem for this time of year. I enjoyed the way you addressed the apple in the last part of your poem and the mention of the flavor of earth in its heart. Lovely construction of this poem!

Strong stuff, Kelly Jo. Just when I want to go to bed here in Spain, you guys keep me up late with wander. Such pretty language—what poetry pushes us to do— the blush of skin, just beautysinbeauty
Thanks for sharing this one pretty.

This is so creative, Mrs. M. Perhaps it’s all that naughty company the apple keeps that makes it so delicious.

There is an Australian saying “She’ll be apples”. Hope so.

What a dance of image and metaphor–as juicy as any apple, and mind food of a high order.

Aw! A ‘tiny orb’ … how delightful

caramel candy truths and half-baked sugar coating – wow
Sometimes, an apple needs to be seen as it is rather than what fables make it out to be. Beautiful work.

Your words are filled with wisdom. Your ability to observe gives hope. I enjoyed this.

that was a fun read. I never really analyzed this particular fruit to such a degree. nicely done.

A fun mix of apfel images.
We have an apple orchard — they are almost all fallen now.
I don’t think we decide anything the way we imagine we do.
We are far less conscious than we imagine.
Thus ‘decisions’ often surprise us.
I love the line: “you hold no wisdom beneath the blush of skin”!
