nine eleven
ten eleven years later
that’s what we call it
not nine eleven oh one
not September 11, 2001
just
nine eleven
two words
three digits
two towers
four planes
thousands
of
mothers
fathers
daughters
sons
sisters
brothers
wives
husbands
aunts
uncles
girlfriends
boyfriends
not statistics
falling
from
the
sky
not dates
or where were you’s
just whole hearts
in odd numbers
each one
the only necessary
evidence
of love
::
.
I wrote this last year as the 10-year anniversary
of this tragic, horrid event approached.
I am re-posting it again today, in honor of all those hearts.
Never forget.

Simply beautiful.

As poignant and beautiful now as it was then.

Each time those two numbers are uttered together, no matter what time of year or under what circumstances, automatically evokes images and emotions, at least for me.

So eloquent. Thank you.
September 11th, 2012 at 10:59 am
Thanks for reminding in this elegant and poignant way.

God bless them all, and God bless America too !!!!

A great rememberance of all who should be today at your sea.

A single tear
Carries more than
A thousand statistics

I’ve read a lot of 9/11 tributes/poems, and I have to say that yours is truly eloquent. You sum up so much pain, loss, senseless violence, tension, etc. in so few words – with poetic vision. And a message of love, of course. Well done.

very well done. may we never forget
September 11th, 2012 at 4:50 pm
Beautifully done! I can’t imagine that we’ll forget anytime soon. I had to work that, but my heart was in New York.

Wow! ~ simply beautiful grace! I love the style visually reminding me in structure of the twin towers held in your stanzas layout! THANK YOU!

This is a stunning write–haunting, and emotionally wrenching in its truth

It never seem to be too long ago. We are still reeling from the shock of seeing innocent lives snuffed. Pity!

just whole hearts…in odd numbers….girl, this was felt! I don’t think there’s anything more that can be said…

An event that defies quantification for sure, and that has been discussed to the point of numbing the mind–I prefer your poem.
September 11th, 2012 at 8:42 pm
A powerful and visual breakdown of the facts.
“just whole hearts
in odd numbers”
each one
the only necessary
evidence
of love
September 11th, 2012 at 8:52 pm
Profoundly wonderful
September 11th, 2012 at 9:28 pm
Yes – the numbers get pretty numbing – you’ve got that for sure. It’s so interesting – to me anyway – and I may be wrong as I don’t watch much TV so don’t know what they say, but the old World Trade Site, also gets boiled down to numbers of a sort – Ground Zero – now. k.

WOW! – this is still as potent
and packs a real gut punch (as it should)
the structure is spot on
dynamiclly driving home
a memorable message!

Beautiful tribute. Loved the closing lines
September 13th, 2012 at 4:24 pm
stunningly beautiful. I like the narrow visual of the poem…almost has a falling feel to it.
