the laws of attraction
sadness weighs
the opposite of happiness
and everybody wants to fix
the world
we’ve fooled ourselves into
thinking we’re in charge
simply because gravity is
kind enough to keep us here
but look at these clouds
painting mother nature’s
fury
only she knows the truth
and being the good mother
she’s not telling
(for our own good)
you storm out
all stomping feet and
slamming doors
pretending it’s your job
to change the view
to make it clear
to reconnoiter
rescuing hope from
boxes marked fragile
playing god
and hide and seek
olly olly oxen free
at least, you think
you’re free
rain weighs
the opposite of
light

olly olly oxen free…..oh how I’d forgotten
and sadness weighs the opposite of happiness
makes me shiver,
this goodness put together so well.
thanks for the delicious shivers,
Jennifer

Often a storm sky surrounds, so I have to turn completely around to take it all in. That’s the way your poetry is for me; so vast in its scope that it turns me completely.

indeed. only she knows and she ain’t telling. every line here is truth.
July 10th, 2012 at 9:50 am
Wow…
July 10th, 2012 at 10:16 am
nice…really nice…love the comparisons in the opening and close….my fav stanza is…we’ve fooled ourselves into
thinking we’re in charge
simply because gravity is
kind enough to keep us here
dang that is good….i think times like the storm and power outage def remind us we are not…it is humbling…i do think though that we can change the world…even if just a little bit…

This hit home particularly hard this morning. The morning started off in an unpleasant way, with harsh words, much stomping of feet and slamming of doors. I am quite exhausted already, and it’s only 7:15.
Your words are lovely, the imagery powerful.

This is beautiful Kelly. Thank you.

Mother nature is a mighty force..”but look at these clouds
painting mother nature’s
fury
only she knows the truth” …so true. We’ve been having floods over here again, and watching the river waters surge by is quite humbling…
July 10th, 2012 at 11:41 am
yeah… i wanna fix the world as well… have to remind myself that it is just gravity that holds me here… good thoughts in this…the balance..the weight.. also loved…rescuing hope from
boxes marked fragile.. how true that is..
July 10th, 2012 at 12:57 pm
We might not be able to change the world, but what if “we” change ????
July 10th, 2012 at 1:48 pm
very good, all of it from fooling ourselves to playing hide and seek. All good.
July 10th, 2012 at 3:05 pm
This is brilliant…we’ve fooled ourselves into
thinking we’re in charge
simply because gravity is
kind enough to keep us here…I love this!
July 10th, 2012 at 3:38 pm
Mother Nature is in charge and I think sometimes she has to remind us. Great piece!
July 10th, 2012 at 3:41 pm
A humbling truth, Jo. Every day, there’s some kind of piece of news that shows how humans are trying to play God and Mother Nature. And it’s sad knowing that it’s going to backlash in their face.
Earth was here long before us, and it’ll be here when we’re gone. A wonderful write, thank you for sharing.

we’ve fooled ourselves into

WOW! I think this poem needs to go up in my meditation space; you’re amazing!

Very intuitive. I like the play on words. “rescuing hope from
boxes marked fragile”
Hope is fragile indeed. But who are we to tamper? <3 I love it!
July 10th, 2012 at 4:33 pm
“simply because gravity is
kind enough to keep us here”
That pretty much says it all. Excellent poem.

Love the opening and closing lines–like drinking rainwater, just a little odd on the tongue, but full of something you don’t always taste…also loved the sense of proportions being righted–we really do think a lot of ourselves.

one of life’s lessons i learned finally in my fifth decade, is that we only fool ourselves to believe we are in charge. we are never in charge.
in fondest, tilda

That’s pretty great right there.
Those closing lines are somethin’ else.
Great write.

Life is full of experiences in which we feel we sense that we should have control but some things take an irrational turn and leave us stunned at our own weakness. Wonderful work.
July 10th, 2012 at 9:44 pm
wonderful.
very light, yet strong, angry.
“rescuing hope from
boxes marked fragile”
July 10th, 2012 at 9:45 pm
I did want to add, I think the parenthesis part is unnecessary.
Its understood and it breaks up your flow a bit.
but thats just my opinion…
July 10th, 2012 at 10:07 pm
hmmm… i appreciate your input, though i am not sure that i agree. that phrase is intended as a bit of sarcasm. but i will definitely ponder your point.

I really love how you end where you begin, the idea of weighing or assaying the emotions, though ending with the elements. In the process, you delve into that nature/emotion relationship revealing some very telling events that heighten their meaning in the context of everyday life. There are numerous passages that do this, and I find the images very sharp and transparent, angling into each other so naturally. I found the following lines absolutely intriguing:
rain weighs
the opposite of
light
July 10th, 2012 at 10:52 pm
i love your words….and the images my head forms when i read them.
and the memories you brought back to me just now….as we yelled,
“ollie ollie oxen free” so many summer nights !!…xo
July 10th, 2012 at 11:02 pm
So many interesting lines here. My favorites:
we’ve fooled ourselves into
thinking we’re in charge
simply because gravity is
kind enough to keep us here’
Though I also love the idea of hope in boxes. k.

Gorgeous

I like the contrasting emotions and perspective ~
Gravity vs. lightness and beauty like clouds and rain ~
Enjoyed your reflections ~

There are so many good lines in this prose I can’t pick a fave. Great great! And the photo is stupendous!

Each mother knows and finds it impossible to tell. Youth will learn the hard way, as will man – able parallel between mother nature and a human one. Why do we think we can actually control all that much! Liked the poem immensely. Well done.
July 11th, 2012 at 1:45 pm
Oh excelllent! And mother nature is indeed in charge…
