fencing
no man is an island,
though we try
to stand
on our own
fighting demons
with swords of wit and sarcasm,
we are always bumping into
different versions
of ourselves
and
tripping over the heart
that gets left on
the floor,
broken.

we do try and we do trip over the broken heart. perfect photo, and more than perfect thoughts.

Even the non-klutzy of us are prone to that sort of misstep.

Excellent closing lines…very very profound…

Even when we aren’t broken, we some how find a way to convince ourselves of our flaws. Tripping, messing up, so no good can last…at least within the secret rooms of our minds…thought this wonderful and quite thought provoking…

The center section of the poem is my favorite:
“fighting demons with swords of wit and sarcasm, we are always bumping into different versions of ourselves”
But the whole thing is awesome … and so true.

Yes, it’s okay to be witty or sarcastic in fun but, if it’s out of spite then it hurts and leaves us feeling bruised on the inside as well as in mind.
Powerful in its truth.

Oh, that poor little heart on the floor. I want to pick it up. Maybe it’s even mine. 🙂
Another beautiful poem, Kelly. I always love your word scenes.

So very true and I think it is true even when the heart is not broken–we try to fend for ourselves in this world using ugly words, hurting words.

Really nice piece and very truly spoken. Thank you for sharing

This is a strong poem expressed in minimal words. I like that. It makes each word more concentrated, the meaning more powerful. Great poem!

Love this and the imagery it creates. Weaving magic with your words, what a gift.

I always did wonder…if man was an, or on an island, or what have you, why the bloody hell did he never build himself a boat?
Still, you are right. We try so hard to stand up on our own, to be wholly independent, but that fact is, we can’t isolate ourselves entirely. To some degree, we’ll always need other people – be they friends, family, what have you. But it’s a lesson often learned the hard way…

Lovely poem with those disconcerting images that I suspect will stick with me long after I log off– different versions of myself and that lonely heart on the floor.

Love this, “fighting demons
with swords of wit and sarcasm”. You should see the size of my sarcasm blade!

All of his adult life, my husband thought he was an island. His illness has taught him so much.
This is beautiful ~

Wise and true.

No man is an island but what about a cat? They sure think that..haha
Think we’ve all found that appendage on the floor more than once and kicked it around before it was found. Most times many can stand alone, but we always need somewhere there to catch us.

words of wisdom.
I like the lines:
we are always bumping into

I love the tapering shapes made by these simply perfect words.
It is so true! We are only ever bumping into other versions of our self, tripping up over the heart that breaks in that illusion that we are somehow divided and alone.
It’s funny but as kids we seem to have this integral understanding that we are connected, that we are a part of oneanother’s souls. Then we slowly begin the painful process of individuation. Finally we again realise that we are continually transitioning into aspects of one another. And there lies relatedness and true compassionate connection.
Fantastic poem!
