hearts all aflutter
they go into town every sunday
for breakfast
choosing one of two places at whim
leaning back into old familiars
smiling at neighbors old as family
he always orders bacon, she likes rye
their two hearts
have run the gauntlet
of this life this love this ritual
and survived
she makes him tea every day at 4:00
he still trusts perfect strangers
they have this land, ten thousand sunsets
and one perfect smile
between them

simply stunning – adore every line – so spacious and airy bit not light weight at all – great tone and sense of word
he always orders bacon, she likes rye
the sheer simple acute precision of this line rocked me.

You need to change your name Mrs. Mediocrity. You madam, are lying. This is by no means mediocre. Incredibly touching and I want to be there….

If this is mediocrity I’ll take it any day of the week, with or without bacon.

Absolutely beautiful, understated and well-expressed throughout, with a fine ending.

My sister and her husband live this way in northern Colorado, though their is only one breakfast place in their little town. You took me there, to one of those Sundays, too. I get the eggs, hashbrowns and bacon. And if it isn’t raining and there are still papers on the rack outside, I pick up the local weekly newspaper to find out everything that is not happening.

I hope that i can say something similar one day – this is beautiful – especially because you have taken everday and sculpted a feeling from it

Now, THIS says what life and love are meant to be all about.
My parents just celebrated their 52nd anniversary.
And that photo — I have no idea what it is of, but I LOVE it!!!

A simple idyllic scene of couple in love, their love seems great even without boasting; it is seen in their dedicated daily routine. Lovely. 🙂

Wonderful pictures and imagery here. The rhythm engages the emotions. Compact, no superfluous description. A real keeper.
