on building character
yes
i have dents
and bruises
patches of rust
worn spots
leaking wisdom
each one acquired
through trial
and tribulation
and this weather
that offers
no mercy
most days
i would not trade it
but every so often i recall
an unblemished version
all new and shiny
whole and innocent
and
just for a moment
when the wind
passes through me
i whisper a tune
that echoes
regret
but then
i slip myself back
into this comfortable
broken-in skin
and try hard
not to smile
as she
stands there
all shy and quiet
absolutely alone
knocking softly
at time’s
back door

Your words ACHE for their own book. You must know that, right?

Beautiful way of expressing this…

so wise, so true, so beautiful. love the leaking wisdom, the broken-in skin.. just what i needed to see on this dreary wednesday, when i feel a little dented myself.

This is gorgeous. Love so many lines, “comfortable broken-in skin” and “knocking softly at time’s back door.” Like you say, painful process, but most days, not worth trading. Love this piece!

“i would not trade it

Many fine aspects to this poem—though sad in respect to its subjects—richly suggestive in presenting a complex situation.

i always go for that “broken in” anything over something brand new 🙂

leaking wisdom. you are. you do. you remind me that the merciless weather has a purpose, that i myself am a work in progress, and that time has a back door. though you do leave me wondering if she is on the inside knocking to get out, or outside, trying to find her way in. (i believe, you know, that you do that on purpose, as all artists do – let me wonder, let me put myself on whichever side of the door i see. and i thank you.)

There’s a certain grace that comes with personal acceptance. Nice One Shot.

I desire to “leak wisdom….” Simply beautiful words and what a great image to accompany them.

I am in total awe of people like yourself who can put together words so beautiful and with such relevance to both subject and life.I have no idea how you do it!
